About IHSA
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Inc. (IHSA Inc.) was established in 1999 with the purpose of promoting competition for riders of any skill level regardless of financial status. Students compete individually and as team members at both Regional and National levels. For all who take part, these IHSA competitions develop sportsmanship, team enthusiasm and horsemanship (www.ihsainc.com). Competitors in the IHSA program are unique horsemen- rather than being able to form a bond with an equine partner, the rider must demonstrate their ability to successfully show a new horse randomly assigned to them at every competition.
IHSA is a national organization which is broken up into 9 zones. Furthermore, each zone contains several regions. A team competes during the regular season against teams within its region- for example; OSU competes against U of O, LBCC, U Vic, UBC, WWU, WSU, UW, SU, SOU, CWU, and DU.
At the end of the year, the high-point team for Western moves on to Semi-Finals and Hunt Seat moves on to Zones. The top individual riders from each class move on to the Regional competition, and from there the top riders progress on to Semi Finals or Zones. The National competition is the pinnacle of the year for both teams and individual riders- bringing together the best of the best for both English and Western disciplines.
